Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS)

This is a master’s by coursework and minor dissertation. The following courses are available in the programme (of which two must be selected) (48 credits each):

  • Internship
  • Digital Curation (also offered as an Occasional Course)
  • LIS Leadership & Management
  • Teaching & Learning for LIS Professionals (also offered as an Occasional Course)
  • Research Librarianship.
Entrance requirements

Honours degree or equivalent at NQF Level 8 (65% or above) in the field of Library and Information Studies.


Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Library and Information Studies

This is master’s by research (dissertation).  We require an approved research proposal for registration purposes.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Specialising in Digital Curation

A master's by coursework and dissertation.

The coursework component consists of a compulsory course (Principles of Digital Curation, 48 credits) and two of the following electives (24 credits each):

  • Curating in Context
  • Curation for Digital Media and Formats
  • Information Architecture and Metadata
  • Research Data Management (also offered as an Occasional Course)
  • Technology Enable
